A major new public art incentive is underway in London, featuring works by eminent British and international artists displayed throughout the city’s underground Tube network. Dubbed #LondonIsOpen, the joint project between Mayor Sadiq Khan and UK artist and 2013 Turner prize nominee David Shrigley hopes to send a message to the world that London is open for business and ready to embrace new ideas and visitors from around the world. Participating artists include Cuba-born Tania Bruguera, who created an image of the ancient continent of Pangaea, with the theme “Dignity has no nationality.” London-born and based Mark Titchner contributed No Them Only Us, a digital video installation displayed at Brixton Station on cross-track projectors on the station’s platforms. The work of London-based video artist, photographer and 1997 Turner Prize winner Gillian Wearing, OBE, is visible on digital escalator panels. Wearing’s photograph of a couple holding a placard reading Work Towards World Peace is from the artist’s larger video work in which the confessions of ordinary people were recorded, during which passersby were asked to write down what they were thinking about.
