When is the last time you visited tranquil Shelter Island in New York? If it’s been a while, the opening of Léon 1909 is a great reason to go back. Hop on a ferry from Sag Harbor or Greenport on Long Island for the short trip to this iconic island community. Book a table in advance and enjoy a menu of rustic French and Italian dishes created from fresh, local and regional ingredients.

The restaurant is the dreamchild of father-daughter team Robert and Valerie Mnuchin, who sought to bring an aura of Old-World charm to this seaside destination. The inviting interior features warm lighting, a high-trestle ceiling and weathered leather surfaces focused around a central wood-burning hearth and chimney. There’s also an enticing outdoor terrace with teak wood tables and comfy cushioned chairs. A separate private dining room can accommodate up to 16 guests.
Menu choices include starters of Persian cucumber with feta, red onions and a Dijon vinaigrette; house-made bread served with cultured butter; and grilled flatbread topped with smashed fava, carrot, garlic scapes, spring onion and pistachio. For entrees, guests can choose favorites such as strozzapreti pasta with fire roasted tomato, basil and Pecorino Romano; sea bass a la Nage with English peas, asparagus, garlic chive and Hakurei turnip; or a Léon burger topped with Gruyére, caramelized onions and sour pickles. An array of tempting desserts includes lemon cream tarts, ricotta cheesecake and banana splits.

Wine lovers will be right at home with carefully selected choices including sparkling, whites reds and Rosés. There’s also an orange wine: a Toscana Bianco from Italy. Léon 1909 is open Sunday–Thursday, 5–10 p.m.
