Los Angeles International Airport banned curbside pick-ups from taxis and ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft as of Nov. 1. Pickups now take place at a new centralized facility, LAX-it, which sits at the east end of Terminal 1.

Travelers will be able to walk to the facility or take a shuttle. Airport officials call the new spot “convenient” and “amenity-rich,” with restrooms, benches, local food trucks, cellphone charging stations, WiFi and sun shades.

Drivers will still be able to drop passengers off at the departures area of LAX terminals.

“Anyone who has come to LAX knows that traffic in the Central Terminal Area can get rough, and we have heard from our guests that the current system with ride pickups can be frustrating,” said Keith Wilschetz, deputy executive director for operations and emergency management, Los Angeles World Airports.

“LAX-it will provide an easy, efficient experience for guests using taxis and ride apps, and reduce overall traffic in and around the central terminal area for all those driving to and from LAX and our neighbors.”

Shuttles to the pick-up area run every three–five minutes during peak travel times.

LAX-it is a temporary add-on to be replaced by the airport’s new Automated People Mover, which opens in 2023.
