During September and October of this year, Kyiv City Ballet — under the artistic direction of Ivan Kozlov — will tour the United States in its first-ever appearance in the country. Adding to the drama of the schedule is the ballet company’s story: Their flight to Paris took place the day before the invasion in Ukraine, and the performers have been unable to return home since their tour began.
“We are honored to share the beauty of ballet with US audiences, through Ukrainian artists,” said Ivan Kozlov, dancer and leader of the troupe. “Touring the States for the first time with a range of ballets makes an important global statement. It demonstrates the resilience of the Ukrainian people.”
The U.S. tour promises plenty in the way of majesty, with a full-length performance of Swan Lake, choreographed by Marius Petipa, Lev Ivanov and Ivan Kozlov; and a mixed repertory program comprised of three ballets — the contemporary Thoughts (choreography by Vladyslav Dobshynskyi), the neo-classical Tribute to Peace (choreography by Ekaterina and Ivan Kozlov) and Men of Kyiv, a Ukrainian folk dance choreographed by Pavlo Virsky.
Ukrainian prima ballerinas Krystina Kadashevych and Oksana Bondarenko will be featured during the U.S. tour, along with principal dancer Vsevolod Maevskiy, a soloist of the Mariinsky Ballet and a former student of Kozlov. Confirmed tour stops include Davidson College in Charlotte, North Carolina; The Music Hall in Detroit; The Auditorium Theatre at Roosevelt University in Chicago; New York City Center Fall for Dance Festival in NYC; Arkansas State University Fowler Arts Center in Arkansas; and The Wilson Center at Cape Fear College in Wilmington, North Carolina.
Additional dates will be added this summer, and a full performance schedule is available at Kyiv City Ballet’s website.
