Bowen’s Wharf in Newport, Rhode Island, begins the holiday season in high style, with a full array of family-friendly activities on Thanksgiving weekend and the weekend following.
Black Friday, Bowen’s Wharf shops and restaurants all open their doors to visitors, several contributing a portion of the proceeds from the shopping holiday to local nonprofits and organizations. In the evening, enjoy the illuminated holiday boat parade.
Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1–2, shops open in time for the Newport Holiday Stroll. Also Dec. 1, Bowen’s Wharf celebrates its 48th annual Christmas tree lighting. Live music, children’s characters and others take the stage before the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus. The 30-foot Christmas tree lighting takes place at 6 p.m. Barring inclement weather, all children enjoy the chance to talk to Santa.
During the festive event, many shops and restaurants on Bowen’s Wharf offer in-house promotions, hot drinks and baked goods. Restaurant reservations are recommended.
Admission to all events is free and parking is available on site, except for during the Christmas tree lighting.
