JetBlue, Delta Test New-Wave Boarding Passes

JetBlue and Delta Air Lines announced plans to test biometric boarding passes in the coming months. The passes would replace traditional printed passes and utilize facial recognition technology and fingerprinting.

JetBlue tested the technology in June on flights from Boston to Aruba. The airline said in a statement that the passes utilize “a quick photo” from a custom-designed camera station that matches the traveler’s image to their passport, visa or immigration photo in the CBP database.

If the images match, “the customer will be notified on an integrated screen above the camera when they are cleared to proceed to the jet bridge.”

JetBlue says the technology “will move JetBlue crewmembers from behind the counter to interact with customers and assist throughout the process. JetBlue will issue iPad minis to crewmembers, giving them mobility to monitor and manage the boarding process while interacting with customers.”

Delta is dabbling with using fingerprints as boarding passes. In a statement, the airline said, “SkyMiles Members can forego a paper or mobile boarding pass and hard copy ID in favor of using fingerprints as proof of identity at the Delta Sky Club” at D.C.’s Reagan National Airport.

If testing goes well, members may be able to use fingerprints to check a bag, check-in at a Delta Sky Club and board a flight.
