JetBlue announced last month it will roll out its first fully-integrated biometric self-boarding gate at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The project is a partnership between JetBlue and United States Customs and Border Protection. Travelers flying to some international destinations from the airport’s Terminal 5 will be able to try the technology, which involves a dual lane, self-boarding system that uses facial recognition to verify passenger identity.
“The success of JetBlue’s biometric boarding program is a testament to the airline’s ongoing work to create a personal, helpful and simple experience,” said Ian Deason, vice president, JetBlue, in a statement. “The boarding touchpoint is an area that needs innovation and we feel biometrics will change the future of air travel as we look to create a more seamless journey throughout the airport.”
The new gate comes after JetBlue’s biometric boarding trials at Boston Logan International Airport, Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and JFK were deemed successful.
The airline also became the first to partner with Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority to roll out a one-step biometric boarding experience for passengers flying to Nassau, Bahamas from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
