JetBlue announced network changes to better meet customer demand.
New daily service to Guayaquil (GYE) in Ecuador from Fort Lauderdale (FLL) begins in the first part of 2019. It is the sixth JetBlue destination in South America.
“New flights to Guayaquil introduce yet another unique and exciting destination to our customers, while also extending JetBlue’s reach into Latin America,” said Joanna Geraghty, president, JetBlue. “Broadening our international presence in Ecuador also helps us grow our route map in Fort Lauderdale where JetBlue is the leading airline.”
Guayaquil is Ecuador’s largest city and main port, celebrating nearly 200 years of independence. With a population near 2 million, it serves as a gateway to the Galapagos Island.
“Adding this new JetBlue operation into the market will give passengers additional options to get to the country and also gives more United States passengers the opportunity to get to know the beauties of Ecuador,” commented Ángel Cordova, CEO, Guayaquil Airport.
An Airbus A320 aircraft is slated for the route.
Starting this winter, JetBlue adds four new routes connecting key destinations in the United States and Caribbean. These include Boston (BOS) and Rochester (ROC); Fort Lauderdale and Phoenix (PHX); Fort Lauderdale and St. Maarten (SXM); and Providence (PVD) and Palm Beach (PBI).
The daily routes are on sale now.
Increased service is also now available on nearly 25 of the airline’s most popular routes, with particular focus on JetBlue’s Boston and Fort Lauderdale hubs. In order to offer increased service on more popular routes, JetBlue eliminates service between the following, effective Jan. 8, 2019: Daytona Beach (DAB) and New York (JFK); St. Croix (STX) and San Juan (SJU); and Washington, D.C. (IAD) and both New York and Boston.
“We constantly review network performance and make adjustments to support our focus city strategy, which is about building up our key markets to be stronger and even more relevant to local travelers,” said Geraghty. “In total, these changes are forecast to generate a substantial improvement in annual profit and strengthen our business as a whole, while allowing us to invest in our growth and our industry-leading customer experience.”

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
