Japan’s Best Destinations

The island of Japan is home to vibrant cities, beautiful beachfront towns and quaint, historic villages — all offering unique experiences. Here are a few of our favorite destinations.

Tokyo is one of the most exciting, eclectic cities in the world, brimming with amazing restaurants, colorful gardens and innovative architecture.

For something a little quieter, head to Kyoto, a historic city with winding streets, generations-old shops and restaurants, ancient temples and bamboo forests.

Kanazawa’s old geisha district is a must-see, home to Kanazawa Castle; the beautifully preserved Higashi Chaya-gai, a historic teahouse; and Kenrokuen Garden, one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens.

Art lovers enjoy large collections of contemporary art museums, galleries and exhibits in Naoshima. The city is home to Benesse House, featuring works by world-famous Japanese artists; the gorgeous Chichu Art Museum; and Teshima, a tiny island with three notable art sites.

The cosmopolitan city of Osaka is renowned for its food and nightlife, and Hiroshima, Miyajima and Mount Koya for their rich history. Located in a peaceful wooded area in Wakayama Prefecture, Mount Koya is home to more than 100 temples and monasteries, some of which you can stay in for a unique accommodation experience. While you’re there, visit Okunoin Cemetery, one of Japan’s most sacred sites.

The quaint port town of Onomichi is a must-visit for its pleasant atmosphere, scenic surroundings and collection of temples. Art lovers can pay homage at the Onomichi City Art Museum.

Twenty-five miles from Kyoto is Nara, which preceded Kyoto as Japan’s ancient capital. Here you’ll find UNESCO World Heritage monuments like the eighth-century Todaiji Temple, the world’s largest wooden building and home to Japan’s largest Buddha.

Finally, the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage is something every visitor to Japan should experience. The UNESCO-recognized Kumano region boasts beautiful landscapes, charming villages, an onsen and hiking.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
