Following approval from both airlines’ home governments, Japan Airlines and Malaysia Airlines are set to launch a joint business structure in 2020.

The airlines were waiting on the Malaysian Aviation Commission to grant the venture an individual exemption and for Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to grant an antitrust immunity decision.

The agreement gives the airline the freedom to offer cooperative flights between Malaysia and Japan. Customers benefit from a larger network with more choices, better connection options and an enhanced frequent-flyer program. The airlines did not go into details on how the membership programs will change.

“We would like to thank the regulators for approving our ATI application with Malaysia Airlines. We anticipate launching this joint business relationship in 2020 to provide additional travel benefits for our mutual customers,” said Yuji Akasaka, president, Japan Airlines.

“We are excited for the opportunities the Joint Business provides for both airlines. We are confident that with this partnership, we will be able to deliver important benefits to our customers and to grow the business between our countries,” said Izham Ismail, CEO, Malaysia Airlines.

Both airlines are members of oneworld. Malaysia Airlines serves more than 40,000 passengers each day. Japan Airlines operates in more than 405 airports in 66 countries with a fleet of 235 aircraft.  There is no exact timeline for the venture to take hold, except for 2020.
