After Hamas fired thousands of rockets from Gaza on Oct. 7, Israel’s prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has declared the country to be at war. The unexpected attack has already left more than 1,000 dead, with many more kidnapped and held hostage.
Footage of the attack shows people running through the streets, with even revelers at a recent music festival fleeing for the lives. Warning sirens wail through the air across southern and central Israel, including popular tourist destinations like Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. Both soldiers and civilians are held hostage.
Following the attack and subsequent conflict, questions arise as to whether it’s still safe to travel to any part of Israel.
As of Oct. 9, The Department of State offers resources for U.S. citizens in Gaza wishing to leave. Currently, flights continue to operate at Ben Gurion International Airport, which remains open. That said, several major airlines announced they have suspended flights in the area, including Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Norwegian Air and Ryanair. El Al, however, added more flights to bring reservists back to assist in the country’s mobilization. Two Lufthansa flights from Germany were grounded on Oct. 8, as well as departures via Brussels Airlines. As of time of reporting, British Airways continues to operate flights to Tel Aviv from London Heathrow.
U.S. citizens currently in Gaza who wish to leave are encouraged to check the status of the Rafah Crossing into Egypt.
The U.S, Embassy Jerusalem continues to closely monitor the security situation in the Gaza periphery.
As for travelers seeking entry into Israel, it is advised to avoid all travel to Gaza; the Sheba’s Farms and Gajjar; and anywhere within about 2,000 feet of the border with Lebanon east of Metula, including the northern edge of the town and within about 2,000 feet of the border with Syria.
It’s also urged to avoid all but essential travel to areas north of and including Jenin city, Burqin and Arranah in the north of the West Bank. This includes Jenin refugee camp and all areas north of this until the Jalamah checkpoint. Only essential travel is advised to the city of Nablus, Joseph’s tomb and the Balata and New Askar refugee camps near Nablus and the village of Huwara.
