According to online travel booking platform agoda, Singapore travellers are more inclined toward international trips than travellers from its Asia Pacific neighbors.

The recently released Travel and Tech Study found Singaporean travellers took an average 3.1 international trips in the last 12 months — more than that of travellers from Malaysia, the Philippines, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand, who all averaged between 1.1 and 1.7 overseas trips in the past year.

Thailand and the Philippines lead the way for domestic travel, averaging 5.1 and 4.4 local trips in the past 12 months, followed by Indonesia and Malaysia with an average 3.9 and 3.4 domestic trips. The 10 most popular destinations for Malaysian travellers are all located within their own country, with Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca taking the top three spots. Australia and Singapore travellers took only 2.7 and 1.1 domestic trips, respectively.

The study’s findings suggest not only an overall increase in travel for Asia Pacific countries, but the high number of overseas and domestic trips taken by several of these countries points to growing disposable income, as travellers look to spend more on recreation and cultural experiences.

“It’s interesting to see the differences between travellers across the region but perhaps what’s as meaningful is the fact that people are travelling more and more. It shows that travel is becoming more important to people all over Asia Pacific, so as we increase the number of properties available on agoda, there is also a growth in demand,” said Andrew Edwards, global director for brand and communications, agoda.
