As satellite providers boost technology, in-flight WiFi is leaving the slow lane and starting to change, according to a new article from The New York Times. Airlines upgrading their systems with recent developments in technology include JetBlue, equipping more than 150 of its planes with satellite-based WiFi and planning to install the remainder of its fleet with the service by next year, and Virgin America, collaborating with ViaSat on its new planes and promising to deliver Internet speeds about eight to 10 times faster than other systems.

“Connectivity is indeed getting better on flights, but it’s a very slow process, which is frustrating to business travelers who increasingly rely on the service,” said Chris McGinnis, founder, TravelSkills, in The New York Times article. “The thing that they must realize is that in-flight WiFi is still a very new product, and the expectation that you’ll get a good, strong signal like you do at home or office needs to be reined in.”
