Pulling up to Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort & Spa, the first thing I notice is Moniz Family Surf directly across the street. It’s the legendary surf family’s home base and I planned to see them after checking in to the unique Surf House suite at the hotel. It’s a newly upgraded junior suite designed to celebrate the island’s surf culture, from its location perched directly over the break to design details like custom boards, local artwork and beach-inspired décor. Hyatt Regency Waikiki is a sprawling resort with 1,230 rooms, including 19 suites, but check-in is surprisingly quick, personal and semi-outdoors, like much of the property.

The Surf House suite pairs a prime position over Waikiki’s iconic breaks with interiors layered in local influence. Custom Alaia boards by Lloyd Boards lean against walls; NOHO Home soft furnishings bring a breezy, bohemian feel; and artwork by Aloha de Mele and Kamea Hadar brings bold Hawaiian color.

The space feels more like a guest surf bungalow than a traditional hotel room, with glass doors to a dazzling ocean view that leave no doubt you’re in the heart of Waikiki. Guests receive daily breakfast and 15 percent off private surf lessons and board rentals at Moniz Family Surf, and a portion of each stay benefits Andy Irons Foundation.
Elsewhere in the resort, accommodations span a wide range, but premium suites offer the most expansive layouts. These high-floor escapes feature full living rooms; oversized balconies; and wraparound views of ocean, city or Diamond Head. They’re built for families or longer stays but work equally well for travelers who want more space to settle in.
Guests booked into Regency Club stays gain access to Regency Club Lounge, where breakfast is served each morning in a private dining area with ocean views, either indoors or out. Throughout the day, the lounge offers snacks, drinks and hors d’oeuvres in a quieter space above the bustle. It’s not overly formal, but it’s a welcome buffer from the non-stop activity of Waikiki below, and all-day access to complimentary bites (and coffee) keeps energy up between adventures.
Dining at the hotel begins with SWIM, the poolside restaurant and bar serving lunch, dinner and drinks with live music daily. The vibe is casual and tropical, with crowd-pleasers like poke bowls, fried chicken katsu and tropical cocktails overlooking the waves. Dinner at The Buffet at Hyatt takes a different approach with abundant rows of seafood, banchan and grilled meats, but still offers open-air dining with views over the beach … it’s not your average buffet. Locals book it for special nights out and guests are quick to return when they realize how much the menu rotates. Friday and Saturday nights are the liveliest, with live Hawaiian music and a festive atmosphere that mirrors the street energy just a few floors below.

If dinner and a show is more your speed, Nā Lei Aloha delivers a full-scale cultural performance right at the hotel. Held Sunday–Thursday evenings on the Nāleʻa Terrace, the show blends hula, music and storytelling with access to the hotel’s buffet. It’s polished and heartfelt, and rooted in tradition.
Of course, a stay in the Surf House suite comes with more than just a view: It’s also tied to a surfing experience through the hotel’s partnership with Moniz Family Surf. Lessons take place just across the street, on the same gentle waves visible from the suite’s lanai. Surfing in Waikiki is famously beginner-friendly, with long breaks and soft takeoffs that have introduced generations to the sport, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy.
Afterward, I head to Nā Ho‘ōla Spa, the hotel’s 10,000-square-foot wellness center perched above the beach. The spa is quiet and expansive, with treatments rooted in Hawaiian healing practices and local botanicals. My full-body relaxation massage is slow, intentional and exactly what my shoulders, arms and legs need after a morning in the water. Nā Ho‘ōla Spa also includes a relaxation area; couple’s treatment rooms; and a full menu of body therapies, scrubs and facials. Everything is rooted in natural ingredients and framed by Waikiki views.

The resort’s central location is truly in the thick of Waikiki’s energy. But the hotel functions like its own small city, too. The Pualeilani Atrium Shops span three levels inside the property, housing galleries, boutiques, a rental car office and places to grab a quick bite or pick up something you forgot to pack.
