Stepping into the lobby of Hyatt Regency Houston, it’s safe to assume the property is one of the largest in the city. The towering 30-story atrium elevators with transparent walls provide dizzying views of either the hotel’s interior or downtown. Earlier this year, the hotel completed a $43 million transformation of all 955 rooms and suites, the lobby, restaurants, bar and meeting spaces.
The Brutalist-influenced design with unconventional use of materials and massive scale was made more welcoming with four new reception pods. A bone-colored backdrop contrasts with the exposed black elevator shaft. The wooden slats of the four reception pods add texture to the space designed by New York City-based Stonehill Taylor. The inspiration comes from the state’s well-known artist community — Marfa.
The bar is made of natural materials — a marble countertop and porcelain tiles. Wood booths and soft seating zones form intimate gathering spots. A slatted wood canopy creates the illusion of a ceiling within the cavernous space.
Our 26th-floor corner guestroom featured a king bed, 50-inch smart television, mini fridge, coffee and tea maker, desk and small table. The neutral color palette of gray, black, white, and gold undertones was influenced by famed American artist Mark Rothko. Mid-century furniture with simple lines and wood tones added visual warmth and a headboard light that shines on a dark blue wall is a playful artistic touch.
The pet-friendly Hyatt Regency has a dog walk area on the sixth floor. Take a dip in the heated outdoor swimming pool or exercise at the 24-hour fitness center featuring Peloton bikes. A large business center with a FedEx office sits beside the lobby. Guests can grab a bite to go at Einstein Brothers Bagel Shop or dine at upscale Shula’s steakhouse, rebranded with a contemporary Scandinavian design. A breakfast buffet is served daily in the bright, lobby-facing section of the restaurant. We lunched at the restaurant, equally enjoying excellent crab cakes and a black and blue filet salad.
While in Houston, visit Rothko Chapel, celebrating its 50th anniversary. The meditative space is beside The Menil Collection, a museum and neighborhood of art located three miles from Hyatt Regency. Many of the Houston’s best cultural offerings, such as the impressive Museum District and Alley Theatre, are easily accessible.
The Hyatt Regency’s friendly staff, freshly renovated accommodations and downtown location make it an ideal choice for both the business or leisure traveler.
