Hurricane Season Prompts Air Travel Disruptions

Hurricane season is in full swing and, last week, storms threatening the United States impeded air travel over the East Coast and in Hawai’i.

Hurricane Florence is getting most of the attention from national media as evacuation procedures began to lag. According to a report from CNBC, hundreds of flights operating to and from East Coast cities that braced for impact were canceled. More than 1,000 flights operating out of Virginia and the Carolinas were canceled.

The Federal Aviation Administration released a statement Wednesday, Sept. 12, warning passengers of common airline practices in the name of safety. The report included precautions that many flights through the path of the storm will be cancelled. If there is no cancellation, flights might be delayed; the FAA said. FAA’s greatest priority is having infrastructure in place to quickly resume operations after the storms pass.

Depending on the severity of the damage and need for emergency flights, the FAA might restrict commercial airspace in favor of emergency response flights, CNBC reported.

On the other side of the continent and across the Pacific Ocean, tropical storm Olivia prompted Hawaiian Airlines to halt commuter flights on Wednesday. The flights operate as part of Ohana by Hawaiian, the airline’s commuter division. In addition to commuter flights, Olivia forced the island of Maui to close schools, courts and other government offices, USA Today reported.
