In an increasingly eco-conscious world, businesses find ways to become more sustainable. The travel industry is no exception and, beginning this summer, airlines announced the removal of various items from their in-flight offerings to reduce plastic waste.

Single-use plastic utensils such as straws, cups and bottles will be phased out and replaced by either multiuse materials or materials that decompose more efficiently.

By the end of 2018, Hilton Hotels plans to remove plastic straws from its properties worldwide, as well as remove plastic water bottles from conference rooms and event halls. Hilton’s properties in some Asian counties, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji already committed to this task, with some replacing plastic straws with biodegradable paper straws.

Marriott will forgo the plastic bottles used for toiletries and will replace them with re-fillable dispensers that contain shampoo, conditioner and body wash.

Onboard Carnival cruises, passengers will have to specifically request a straw for drinks as plastic straws will no longer be included in beverages purchased on the ship, except cocktails.

Finally, Alaska Airlines passengers receive compostable birch stirring sticks instead of plastic ones, as well as bamboo citrus picks.
