Not quite ready to switch your closet over to sweaters and snow boots? Head to laid-back, still- warm Coastal Mississippi. Steeped in Southern charm and dotted with quirky waterside towns, it’s the perfect destination antidote to temperature drops in other parts of the country. Here are a few boutique hotels to consider as a base for a getaway:

Bay Town

Bay Town Inn

Once a gracious Southern mansion, Bay Town Inn in Bay St. Louis is surrounded by towering oaks, with a central Old Town address perfect for strolling to a collection of galleries, shops, antique emporiums and restaurants. Traveling with others? Choose The Residence, a two-bed, two-bath house with a wide porch facing Bay St. Louis. Other options include 10 king suites and a queen suite with balcony. Amenities include daily fresh-baked muffins, a saltwater pool, beach access and dog-friendly accommodations. On weekends, guests can enjoy a complimentary hot breakfast next door at The Oyster Bar.

Gulf Hills

Gulf Hills Hotel & Resort

Legend says Gulf Hills Hotel & Resort in Ocean Springs was built as a hideout for Al Capone. Since those days, the property served as the state’s first working dude ranch, and became a beloved getaway location for celebrities including Marilyn Monroe, Judy Garland, Jayne Mansfield and Elvis Presley — fondly regarded as a local. Elvis even had a favorite room: Villa #9, overlooking the water. Part of the Rain Travel Collection of boutique properties, the hotel has 66 guestrooms, 13 waterfront villas, a marina, ballroom, 18-hole golf course, The Pink Pony Clubhouse, and a fully-restored pool where Elvis once splashed and swam.

The Springs Hotel

Also part of the Rain Travel Collection, The Springs Hotel in downtown Ocean Springs features 15 rooms named for flowers and healing botanicals such as Lemon Balm Haven, Rose Hip Hideaway and Rosemary Retreat. That makes perfect sense, given this town’s rich history as a healing destination and the restorative mineral springs that flow beneath it. Luxurious textiles, bespoke furnishings, richly imaginative décor, balconies and kitchenettes are featured (amenities vary with individual rooms) and are reflective of the town’s history as an artist’s colony where American master Walter Anderson once dwelt. While you’re out wandering, be sure to visit Walter Anderson Museum of Art and the Frank O. Gehry-designed Ohr–O’Keefe Museum of Art.
