Hong Kong is one of the world’s largest hubs of ivory, but it’s taking steps to change. Last month, this Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China announced it would make efforts to shut down its domestic ivory trade entirely.
“It will be a total ban,” said Leung Chun-ying, chief executive, Hong Kong, during a press conference.
Few details were available on when exactly the ban would go into effect, and how it would be enforced. But Leung seems set on the issue: “We will do it expeditiously, as quickly as we can. But this will, as you probably appreciate, require legislative amendments.”
Much of the world’s demand for ivory centers around China. The ivory is obtained from poachers who kill tens of thousands of elephants each year for their tusks, and Hong Kong is an important entry point for the illegal trade’s entry into mainland China.
