After operating on the continent for more than 60 years, Hilton continues to promote sustainable growth and tourism in Africa.
Less than a year ago, Hilton announced its Big Five commitment to drive sustainable travel in Africa. According to a company release, the commitment works to force positive social and environmental change in key areas, including youth opportunity, water stewardship, anti-human trafficking, local sourcing and wildlife protection.
“Hilton is fully committed to Africa and the sustainable development of its travel and tourism sector. Our teams across the continent are empowered to invest in and scale up initiatives that build skills among young people, mitigate risks in human trafficking, engage local entrepreneurs across our supply chain, improve water efficiencies and promote responsible wildlife-based tourism,” said Rudi Jagersbacher, president, MEA and T, Hilton.
So far, the hospitality group set aside $626,000 toward the community projects outlined above by Hilton leadership. Some of the efforts the hotel group undertakes in the name of sustainability include sponsoring a local elephant sanctuary in Kenya, investing in a hydroponic farm in Seychelles and working toward accessible water access in Zambia.
Right now, Hilton operates 47 hotels in Africa with 57 more properties in development.
