AAA Travel expects 35.5 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the Labor Day holiday weekend, marking the highest travel volume for the holiday since 2008 and a 1 percent increase over last year.

Though the majority of travelers — 30.4 million — will take to the road to celebrate the final days of summer with one last road trip, more than 2.6 million travelers are predicted to travel by air. The figure represents a 1.5 percent increase this holiday period from last year and represents the largest volume of air travel since 2007.

“A strong labor market coupled with greater job security and rising home prices have all helped to increase disposable income,” said Beth Mosher, spokesperson, AAA Chicago. “Though some consumers remain cautious, these positive indicators are driving a slight increase and allowing millions of Americans to travel on one last summer getaway.”

Airfares are down 1 percent this year, with the average round-trip fare for the top 40 U.S. routes costing $216. According to trade group Airlines for America, about 3 percent more people will fly on U.S. airlines over Labor Day week this year, with 14.2 million expected to take to the skies between today and Tuesday, Sept. 8. The busiest day is likely to be Friday, Sept. 4, ahead of Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 7.

According to the AAA forecast, Americans have historically shown less inclination to travel when Labor Day weekend falls later in the year. With Labor Day falling Sept. 7 this year, the overall travel growth potential is stifled somewhat.
