President Barack Obama’s plan to ease diplomatic relations with Cuba has opened the floodgate to pent-up interested by Americans tourists curious about visiting the island nation that’s been off limits for more than 50 years.
The door may be open, but the concept of easy travel is still a work in progress. For now, Americans interested in visiting Cuba must obtain a general license authorizing a visit that falls into at least one of 12 categories, including:
- Family visits
- Official business of the U.S. government, foreign governments and certain intergovernmental organizations
- Journalistic activity
- Professional research and professional meetings
- Educational activities
- Religious activities
- Public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions and exhibitions
- Support for the Cuban people
- Humanitarian projects
- Activities of private foundations, research or educational institutions
- Exportation, importation or transmission of information or informational materials
- Certain export transactions that may be considered for authorization under existing regulations and guidelines
And the answer to one of the most common questions in light of the new travel guidelines: Licensed U.S. travelers to Cuba will be able to import up to $100 worth of Cuban cigars.
