The Austrian capital is the only metropolis with scalable wine production within its borders; there are about 1,730 acres of vineyards in Vienna’s northern woods. And it would be a mistake not to partake, especially because the Wienerwald (Viennese forest) is picturesque. For an active experience, many local tour companies can get you to the wineries by bike. It’s a bit more physically demanding because the topography is not flat, but operators can supply you with an e-bike to assist with pedaling some of those hills. Once there, make sure you try the local wine specialty — Gemischter Satz — which is experiencing quite a revival. If you’re not familiar, a Gemischter Satz is essentially a type of wine made of many different grapes (sometimes up to 20) that have been planted, harvested and pressed together.
