Guam Offers Travelers Year-Round Fun

Jul 28, 2016
Daily

A popular destination year-round for water sports, dolphin viewing and banana boat rides, Guam has plenty of activity choices that don’t involve a beach. At Latte Stone Park, you can see the ancient stone pillars that once supported the homes of the native Chamorro peoples. Located in Hagåtña, the park is part of the Heritage Walking Trail with a series of well-marked cultural and historic sites along its length. Other notable historic locations include the Gef Pa’go Chamorro Cultural Village, where visitors can stroll among hut structures to peruse traditional weaving, salt making, coconut husking and rope making activities and chat with the crafters and artisans, many of whom are elders of the Chamorro people. Scenic locations connected to the island’s history include Fort Soledad in the south, a spot many credit to Magellan’s first landing in 1521; Taleyfak Bridge in Agat, also known as the Old Spanish Bridge, which marks a section of Guam’s old El Camino Trail; Fort Santa Agueda with gorgeous views of Northern Guam; the Plaza de España; and the Guam Museum in Hagåtña. Time your visit to include a Wednesday, and you can enjoy the Wednesday Night Market at the Y SengSong Chamorro Village in Hagåtña. Along with art, crafts, shopping and plenty of local food, there’s also live entertainment and music. Other pastimes that will keep you dry include a round on one of Guam’s seven golf courses, designed by top names including Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus and including luxury clubhouses with dining and full golf amenities. Phnom Penh as we imagined it stretches beneath us: a picturesque, low-rise mix of Southeast Asian and French Colonial styles. When the inhabitants of those buildings look back at us here in the Fairfield by Marriott hotel in Chip Mong Tower, they see the future.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
