YARDLEY, PA, January 18, 2006 – Donald Trump was the surprise guest at Global Traveler’s annual reader survey gala awards ceremony yesterday in New York City. Trump was among more than 300 well-wishers who congratulated award winners during a ceremony at The Grand Hyatt New York.
Trump, who took the podium in a grand finale moment, following the awards presentation, congratulated the winners for their outstanding contribution to the travel industry. He also congratulated Global Traveler magazine for its success. On January 24, Trump will launch his own new website, www.gotrump.com. “We will have the best rates with airlines and hotels, with links to other websites such as American Express,” he said.
Guest speaker, UNICEF Ambassador Annette Roque Lauer, presented the awards to travel industry executives who represent the best of business and luxury travel. Following the ceremony, she spoke of her introduction to UNICEF as a child in Holland, selling Christmas cards and collecting money for UNICEF. “It wasn’t until I became a parent myself, that I wanted to do more,” she said. She traveled to Indonesia in the aftermath of the Tsunami to help raise money for UNICEF. “We saw the best of the human spirit there. The losses were almost unbearable to witness, but in the midst of despair, we saw signs of hope,” she added. She thanked the airlines that collect small change from passengers and donate miles to UNICEF.
Founded in 1946, UNICEF helps save, protect and improve the lives of children in 157 countries through immunization, education, health care, nutrition, clean water and sanitation. For more information about UNICEF or to make a donation, visit www.unicefusa.org or call 800 4UNICEF.
Survey results were published in the Global Traveler’s January 2006 issue. Readers rated the world’s top airlines, airports, in-flight wines, hotels, car rental companies and other travel-related products and services.
“Global Traveler continues to improve, and we are dedicated to making it the best magazine,” said GT Publisher and CEO Francis X. Gallagher. “Our readers who chose this year’s winners are an elite group of travelers, flying at least 42 roundtrips per year. They have traveled on virtually every airline in the world, experienced every major hotel brand, and sampled many travel-related products,” he added.
United Airlines was the big winner in this year’s survey, taking three major awards as Best Domestic First Class, Best Frequent Flyer Program and Best Premium Economy Class. United Airlines also took Best Business Class Wines and Best White Wine served in the GT annual Wines on the Wing awards.
Singapore Airlines earned top honors as Best Airline in the World. Emirates, new to the North American market, won Best Airline for First Class and Best Airline in the Middle East. JetBlue Airways won Best Airline for Economy Class.
Thai Airways took Best Trans-Pacific Airline, while Asiana earned top kudos for Best In-flight Service and Cabin Staff. British Airways was selected over Virgin Atlantic as Best Business Class. In the regional category, Czech Airlines was named Best Airline in Eastern Europe.
In the airport category, Chicago O’Hare International Airport was named Best Airport in North America, while Changi Airport Singapore climbed ahead of the incumbent Incheon International Airport to be named Best International Airport.
Awards for best in-flight wines went to United Airlines for “Best Wines on the Wing” and “Top 10 White Wines,” Aer Lingus for “Top 10 Red Wines” and Icelandair for “Top 10 Champagnes and Sparking Wines.”
InterContinental Hotels – Priority Club Rewards took top prize for Best Frequent Stay Program, beating out Marriott Rewards who won last year. United Mileage Plus earned Best Frequent Flyer Program.
Readers also gave high marks to Westin Hotels & Resorts, with its attention to detail and much-loved signature “Heavenly Beds“—naming it the Best Hotel Chain in the United States.
Global Traveler Magazine conducted a survey of its readers from February 1, 2005 to August 31, 2005, with open-ended questions for the best in many categories of business and luxury travel. This survey was conducted in the magazine, as an insert to subscriber copies, as a direct mail questionnaire and emailed during the period in question. Only those questionnaires where more than 50% of the questions were completed were counted. Those under 50% were discarded. The 2005 survey contained results generated from 4,839 completed questionnaires under these criteria. Circulated nationally, Global Traveler has an ABC paid circulation of 54,903.
