Ghosts and Charm in Wiltshire

English charm, a friendly staff and multiple ghosts (or the legends, at least) are all part of a stay at the historic Red Lion in the village of Salisbury in Wiltshire. Along with its host of ghostly stories, the hotel — built in 1220 — ranks as the oldest purpose-built hotel in Europe. Among its legends is the story of a bed stolen during a long-ago battle and carried into the trenches by soldiers who were strongly attached to its superior level of comfort. Modern guests can avoid the trenches and book the elegant Seamstress Room, a luxurious space once dedicated to the preparation of the hotel’s linens. The master suite, with a sloped, beamed ceiling, includes a shining metal soaking tub at the foot of the bed, plus a generous sitting area. Room categories include feature rooms with unique décor and style, superior rooms with contemporary flair and classic rooms with charming details. Be sure to wander the hotel’s halls to enjoy the collection of noteworthy clocks, which include the Skeleton and Organ Clock, with an elaborate case carved by prisoners of war from the Spanish Armada, circa 1588.

The hotel is perfectly situated for long walks around Salisbury, and has meeting and event space that can accommodate up to 120 attendees. Along with a Boardroom, individual meeting suites include the Marlborough, Wellington, Chelsea and Churchill rooms. Dining choices include gourmet fare at The Vine Restaurant, named for the beautiful, rare Virginia creeper growing in the courtyard that’s believed to be one of the oldest examples of its species in all of Europe. The restaurant also has a stunning conservatory where breakfast is served. Casual menus can be enjoyed at 1220 Bar in the building’s most historic section; Victoria’s Lounge, a cozy area with fireplace and afternoon tea service; and Court Yard for alfresco options in a gardened outdoor space where the landing area for stagecoaches was once located, and that’s now the location for the hotel’s namesake red lion sculpture.

Amansara Review

It was more than a car journey; it was a transition between worlds. At our first hotel in Siem Reap, huge coaches constantly pulled up outside the lobby to deposit or receive international tour groups; we departed in very different style, in a 1965 black Mercedes limousine once owned by King Sihanouk. The mundanities of mass tourism were left behind. We progressed through the chaotic Cambodian streets in regal comfort and soon arrived at a solid gate.
