No matter your purpose, visiting a new city is marked by the inevitable learning curve to the city’s transportation system. Seattle seems especially daunting, as the city is right on the coast of the Puget Sound, giving the city an intimidating profile on any map. The good news is Seattle offers plenty of options that can help travelers navigate the city.
Ride the Rails
If you plan on traveling a long distance in the confines of Seattle, the Link Light Rail might be your safest bet. Running from Angle Lake Station to the University of Washington with 14 stops along the way, the entire ride takes about 40 minutes.
Train fares range $2.25–3.25, depending on the length of the ride.
In addition to the train, the monorail system runs from Westflake Center to Seattle Center in about two minutes. One-way fare for an adult costs $2.50.
Take the Bus
Maybe not the most glamorous option, buses travel all over Seattle. Organized and run by King County Metro Transit, buses service downtown Seattle and outlying neighborhoods. The whole system’s route maps can be found at King County Transit’s website.
If you prefer, the transit organization also has a mobile app to make navigating the bus lines easier.
Seattle Streetcars
There are two different streetcars running in Seattle. The South Lake Union Streetcar runs 6 a.m.–9 p.m., throughout the week and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The car makes 11 stops in the South Lake Union area, running every 10–15 minutes.
The First Hill Streetcar makes 10 stops in the Chinatown-International district and Capital Hill; running 5–1 a.m. during the week, 6–1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 a.m.–7 p.m. on Sunday.
Seattle’s all day regional transit pass allow one stop tickets access to all public transportation. The pass grants passengers unlimited rides on public transportation during the day it is purchased. The reloadable cards cost $5 to purchase, $8 to redeem and includes a full day of rides.
If all else fails, Seattle has many rideshare services like Uber and Lyft available.
