Parisian sculptures from Rodin’s time are showcased in a new exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon as part of “Pose and Variations: Sculpture in the Age of Rodin.” Around 30 works, drawn from the museum’s own collection and the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen, explore the idea of the pose and 19^th-century French sculpture.

Among the pieces included are works by Jean-Antoine Houdon (1741–1828), Paul Dubois (1829–1905), Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827–1875), Aimé-Jules Dalou (1838–1902), Edgar Degas (1834–1917), Denys-Pierre Puech (1854–1942) and Auguste Rodin (1840–1917).

Displaying the evolution of how certain poses from classical mythology were adopted by these artists and how each developed his own signature translation of those poses, the exhibition will reveal the artists’ small working studies in plaster displayed next to the final piece.

Among the planned events coinciding with this show are guided tours and performances of Formas de Dizer, Sundays, Dec. 16–Jan. 20, 2019, presented by dance students from the Faculdade de Motricidade Humana. Curator Luísa Sampaio will present a talk Nov. 21, followed by presentations Nov. 30, by Julião Sarmento and Rui Sanches, and a presentation Jan. 25, 2019, by Penelope Curtis, Amélie Simier, François Blanchetière and Arie Hartog.
