According to London-based Amba Hotels, U.S. businesses spent $7.3 billion on WiFi connections for business travelers last year, with most money going to 4- and 5-star hotels. Though most major hotel chains offer free WiFi in public areas and to loyalty club members in guestrooms, many charge for the faster WiFi speed and bandwidth most business travelers have at home or in the office. Major hotel groups providing free standard WiFi include Marriott, for members of its Marriott Rewards loyalty program who book with Marriott directly; Starwood, for Starwood Preferred Guest members who book through its websites and travel agents who book through SPG Pro; Hilton, for all members of it HHonors loyalty program; and Hyatt, for all guests. Virgin Hotels is following the trend at its first property in the United States, but has no charge for high-speed WiFi.
