Fónico is one of Mexico City’s hottest new destinations. Located in the trendy Roma Norte neighborhood, Rayo and Fónico quickly established themselves as a must-visit spot for travelers looking to experience the best of the CDMX bar and restaurant scene.  Housed in a landmark heritage estate in Roma Norte, Rayo and Fónico mixes dynamic cocktails with exceptional, contemporary Mexican cuisine.

Since its inception just over a year ago, Rayo and Fónico has made waves in the industry, not only climbing its way onto North America’s 50 best restaurants and bars lists, but representatives from the venue have visited the best bars in major U.S. cities and, with the support of local owners, created pop-up Rayo Fónico to entice sophisticated foodies and drinkers in the United States to take a trip to CDMX and explore the city.

Roma Norte is often called the “hippest” or “trendiest” district of CDMX. For the past decade, the area has attracted an increasing number of young Mexican professionals, U.S. and European expats and lots of international tourists walking along Roma Norte’s tree-lined Avenida Álvaro Obregón, with its buzzing little bars and cafés, colorful street art and beautifully restored residential buildings. In one of the refurbished mansions is Casa Lamm cultural center and for a quick, casual lunch, there is MERCADOROMA (aka Mercado Roma), a unique collection of international gourmet food stalls, as well as the ubiquitous street food vendors.

In Roma Norte, Fónico shares a multilevel mansion with Rayo Cocktail Bar on the upper level and Fónico downstairs. The mansion’s interior design is eclectic, a combination of modern and period pieces. Visitors can use one of the oldest elevators in Mexico to access Fónico on the lower level.

The kitchen at Fónico is supervised by executive chef Billy Maldonado, a former Bellagio chef in Las Vegas and at Jean-Georges in New York. Maldonado created and developed the concept and recipes for Fónico, making it not only monetarily successful but also a major hot spot in the city. His seasonally changing menu includes sustainably caught seafood and local produce from areas around CDMX.

When the Sun Goes Down, the Party Begins on Mykonos

There is something magical about sipping a glass of local wine while watching the sun slip into the Aegean Sea as the afterglow tinges traditional, white-washed Cycladic houses with glorious shades of rose, purple and gold. Ancient Greeks believed Helios, the Sun God, caused sunsets by driving his fiery chariot into the sea. Standing at water’s edge in Mykonos, watching the sky slowly turn from purple to inky black, you almost believe it.

Cruise Alaska for Awe-Inspiring Adventures to Delight All Ages

I hadn’t even made it to my first cup of coffee when I got an early phone call from my sister, who lives two time zones away. “OMG, Kristy, Patsy Cline came on twice while I was driving the kids to school today,” she laughed. “You know what that means, right?” We both gasped and then instantly began singing the lyrics to “La Bamba,” an inside joke we’d shared since our family’s Alaskan cruise decades ago when we, unintentionally, won the ship’s karaoke contest among a sea of Patsy Cline tributes.

The Lancaster Hotel Review

Located in the heart of Houston’s Theatre District, the recently renovated Lancaster Hotel originally opened in 1926. The classic interior with an abundance of natural light floods the two-story lobby. A shimmering chandelier and elegant marble floors juxtapose nicely with the contemporary art displayed on the salon staircase wall.

Beyond the Beach: See Hawai’i’s Diverse Verdant and Volcanic Landscapes on an Island-Hopping Cruise

Midway Atoll is the end of the Hawai‘ian Islands, literally. This is the ultimate fate of these low, sandy islets ringing a lagoon: Eventually these last remnants of a once large volcanic island will sink beneath the waves, completing a story that began 1,500 miles away. Midway, though not easy to get to, occasionally features in cruise itineraries. Holland America Line’s Westerdam offers a rare chance to glimpse the remotest of all the Hawai‘ian Islands with a scheduled stop in October 2024. You can still see the relics of the famous World War II battle here as well as a million nesting albatrosses and other seabirds.
