On the heels of Lonely Planet naming Canada the travel destination of the year for 2017, the Canadian government hopes to offer citizens and visitors cheaper flight fares within the North American nation and across the border.

The world’s second-largest country currently charges hefty airfares to fly from city to city within Canada. In an effort to bring down costs of travel, the Canadian government hopes to draw interest from more international carriers and foster partnerships, thus allowing Canada to develop its own budget airlines for countrywide travel. The tourism ministry plans to assuage the travel process as a whole with faster but still efficient security checks and an increased availability of information regarding travelers’ rights.

Not only does Canada plan to make air travel easier and cheaper for Canadians and visitors, but the U.S. neighbor also hopes to construct high-speed rail for frequent travelers who spend time in Montreal and Toronto, and places in between.
