Yes, we realize a large part of the country (and the world) is in the midst of that season known in song as the bleak midwinter, but cheer up: The lovely Portuguese island archipelago of Madeira is already planning celebrations around its annual Festa da Flor Flower Festival. Taking place April 19–May 6, events include amazing floral displays, plenty of live music, flower markets and a colorful parade through the capital.
Across from City Hall in Funchal in the Largo do Colégio, children cover a Wall of Hope in flowers as a gesture of hope for a better world. In Funchal on Avenida Arriaga, carpets made of real flowers can be oohed and awed over.
