From pork pepper buns hawked at night markets to soup dumplings to beef noodle soup, there’s an overwhelming landscape of culinary options in Taipei. Here are a few iconic bites visitors should seek out.

Soup Dumplings: Made famous by the international chain Din Tai Fung, soup dumplings — or xiao long bao — are a favorite in Taipei. They’re served steamed and eaten with a side of vinegar sauce.

Beef Noodle Soup: Rich, spicy soup with long, chewy noodles and slow-cooked beef hits the spot on rainy days. Tuck into any one of a slew of restaurants specializing in this excellent dish.

Pork Pepper Buns: A popular street food in Taipei, especially at the night markets, these buns —hujiao bing — are sprinkled with sesame seeds and stuffed with peppered pork and green onions. They’re handheld and perfect for eating on the go.

Pearl Milk Tea: Also called bubble tea or boba tea, this sweetened black tea is famous all over the world. But in the city of its origin, you’ll find the best iterations — everywhere you look.

Oyster Omelets: Taipei restaurants offer a ton of seafood dishes, but none more iconic than the oyster omelet. You’ll find it sold from street food vendors accompanied by a savory sauce. This omelet doesn’t involve quite as many eggs as the Western omelets you may be used to.
