From July 7–17, the 33rd Jerusalem Film Festival will flicker across screens at the Jerusalem Cinematheque and assorted venues citywide, opening at the historic Sultan’s Pool with Pedro Almodóvar’s acclaimed film Julieta. During the festival, more than 200 innovative new Israeli and international films will be screened, along with a competition of feature films from around the globe. Also in its third decade, the 32nd Voice of Music in the Upper Galilee offers a five-day concert series opening July 12, and continuing through July 16. World-class performances will include Ohad Ben-Ari’s Violins of Hope. The performance will be played by Jewish soloists and musicians from the Israel Camerata Jerusalem on a collection of restored violins played during the Holocaust. The instruments belong to violin maker Amnon Weinstein, who collects surviving violins from World War II. Other highlights will include movies, open rehearsals, opportunities to meet the musicians and a wide range of chamber, vocal and orchestral works. Returning to this year’s event will be Croatian guitarist Petrit Çeku, Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra harpist Marie-Pierre Langlamet, and violinist, soloist and chamber musician Boris Brovtsyn.
