Facebook and Airbus partner to offer better in-flight WiFi. Facebook says it is working with Airbus “to advance spectrum and aviation policy and continue to demonstrate the viability of HAPS [high altitude platform station] systems for providing broadband connectivity.”

When the service, Aquila, is put in place, “it will be a fleet of solar-powered planes that will beam internet connectivity across the world,” Mark Zuckerberg wrote on Facebook earlier this year.

The fleet will consist of unmanned planes capable of flying for months at a time. The partnership was announced the same week Airbus chief technology officer Paul Eremenko told Bloomberg the company is working on single-pilot and pilotless planes for the future.

Airbus’ investment in Aquila could work well for passengers who would benefit from having uninterrupted internet access in remote areas of the globe while in flight.
