Last month, an EVA Air flight flew close to the mountains outside Los Angeles after an air traffic controller error.

The Boeing 777 departed Los Angeles International Airport headed for Taipei (TPE) when a San Diego-based controller told the pilot to turn left instead of right. That sent the plane climbing toward the flight path of an Air Canada flight and flying dangerously low over the mountains.

The controller realized the error and instructed the plane to stop its climb and turn to avoid a disaster. The plane’s crew was able to correct its path in time.

Residents near the mountains noticed the error. “It sounds like it’s getting lower and lower and really loud, really big,” Altadena resident Kate Sullivan told ABC7. “Like a really big … jet is going right over the house really slowly.”

The Federal Aviation Administration is looking into the incident. They’ve said the flight was not in danger of a plane-to-plane collision, but may have violated federal regulations by veering too close to the mountains.
