Helsinki Offers Impressive Museums and Collections

Finland’s capital city has no shortage of great museums for wiling away an autumn morning or afternoon, including the impressive Finnish National Gallery. Next time you’re in Helsinki, consider lesser-known institutions including the Amos Anderson Art Museum, located in the Forum city block, home to an impressive collection of modern art in a building Anderson had constructed for himself in 1913. Continue your exploration of Anderson at Söderlångvik Museum, where the late artist’s private collection is on view in his summer villa on the small island of Kimito. Combined, the two locations house more than 6,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, photographs and drawings, including the private art collection of Finnish architect Sigurd Frosterus.

The Kirpilä Art Collection is located within the former home of art collector and physician Juhani Kirpilä. Open on Wednesdays and Sundays in the afternoons, the collection includes sculptures and paintings representative of Finnish art during a period spanning the late 19th century to the 1970s. At the new Helsinki City Museum, the focus is the city itself from art and pieces of buildings to candy wrappers and square pianos. Located near historic Senate Square, the new complex includes the Burgher’s House, the Worker Housing Museum, Hakasalmi Villa and the Tram Museum. Through mid-month, a special exhibit titled The Museum of Broken Relationships is on view, including donated objects and text related to break-ups from around the world. The exhibition is an outgrowth of a permanent collection in Zagreb on the same theme by Croatian artists Olinka Vištica and Dražen Grubišić called the Permanent Museum of Broken Relationships.

High-Spirited Hong Kong: The Dynamic Hub Embraces Its Maritime History and Culture

It was known as the “Kai Tak heart attack” — the thrilling, terrifying final approach into Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Airport. Airliners were required to bank sharply at the last moment, dodging hills and apartment blocks to line up with a runway jutting out into Kowloon Bay. The airport is long gone, but international visitors are arriving at Kai Tak again, albeit more sedately. Their cruise ships dock smoothly at Kai Tak Cruise Terminal, a modern gateway designed by Sir Norman Foster.
