Five new countries are being honored by Ethical Traveler as 2016 Ethical Destinations Award winners. Grenada, Micronesia, Mongolia, Panama and Tuvalu were selected for their commitment to conserving natural resources, supporting human rights and protecting animals. These countries are first-time winners of the annual Ethical Destinations Awards.
The new winners join five others already recognized by Ethical Traveler in previous years: Cabo Verde, Dominica, Samoa, Tonga and Uruguay.
Each year, the California-based project researches and publishes a list of the 10 most forward-thinking countries in the developing world. Each is reviewed for its performance in the areas of human rights, social welfare, animal welfare and environmental protection. The countries must also have appeal as travel destinations. Ethical Traveler is a project of Berkeley-based Earth Island Institute.
“While we acknowledge that no country is perfect,” says Jeff Greenwald, co-founder and travel author, Ethical Traveler, “we honor those that strive to build a better, more sustainable society. Their neighbors can learn and benefit from their example ― and so can we.”
