Following the ban of carry-on large electronics on flights from some Middle Eastern countries into the United States, Emirates introduced a laptop and tablet handling service for its U.S.-bound flights.

The new service allows U.S.-bound passengers originating from Dubai (DBX) to use their devices at the gate before boarding. Then, at boarding, they hand them over to a gate agent, who will ensure the devices are “carefully packed into boxes, loaded into the aircraft hold, and returned to the customer at their US destination.”

The service is free, but Emirates is actually discouraging its use, saying passengers “are encouraged to pack their electronic devices into their check-in luggage in the first instance, to avoid delays.”

The new restrictions, imposed by the U.S. Transportation Security Administration, were introduced March 25. Emirates said they planned to implement extra staff “to ease and assist passengers.”
