Most of the buying activity at last month’s Paris Air Show was related to fossil fuel-powered planes. But one company made an impression with its all-electric planes.
U.S. regional airline Cape Air is set to buy a double-digit number of planes from Israeli start-up Eviation, which makes the world’s first commercial electric planes.
Massachusetts-based Cape Air is one of the largest regional airlines operating in the United States, serving around 500,000 passengers annually with short-range flights around the American Northeast and Midwest and in the Caribbean.
The plane they bought from Eviation, called “Alice,” is a nine-passenger commuter plane designed for short-range flights of up to 650 miles at around 240 knots (276 mph) and a cruising altitude of 10,000 feet. The company displayed its prototype at the Paris Air Show.
The $4 million plane has a 900-kilowatt lithium-ion battery. It’s sustainable, low-noise, emission free and cuts down on the cost airlines have to pay for jet fuel. Deliveries are expected to be ready by 2022.
