Being on lockdown is no one’s idea of a vacation, but a new luxury hotel in Roermond, The Netherlands, makes jail time seem serene.

Het Arresthuis (or “the arrest house”) is an old prison property dating to 1863 converted into a high-end hotel. With 19 Dutch prisons closing in the past four years due to the nationwide drop in crime, the availability of real estate increased. As such, the Netherlands came up with ways to convert these spaces to benefit the economy, the Dutch and visitors.

Outfitted with original cast-iron staircases, barred windows and cell doors, the property is also equipped with two full-service meeting rooms, a fitness center and sauna. An exterior patio hosts guests for al-fresco meals in the same spot where prisoners use to spend their recreation time.

The guestrooms (or “comfort cachots”) have been converted from three adjacent prison cells, and larger guestrooms (“deluxe cachots”) are located in old recreation rooms and staff quarters. Larger suites are cleverly named after members of law enforcement such as The Judge, The Lawyer and The Jailer.

Searching for a special event place that will leave guests gaping? Het Arresthuis rents out entire cellblocks for parties up to 200 guests. With stunning white chandeliers and crisp furniture, the cellblocks resemble a 5-star hotel atrium rather than a former jailhouse.
