For the first time, a Disney resort makes its way to mainland China. The sixth international Disney resort celebrated its grand opening June 16, welcoming guests to Shanghai Disneyland with pageantry and pomp. The park is Disney’s most technologically advanced and also features the tallest Disney castle. “The grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort is a celebration of creativity and collaboration, a triumph of imagination and innovation, and a testament to the strong partnership between Disney and China. Together we have created an extraordinary destination, a magical place unique in all the world, where East meets West, the past meets the future and anything is possible for those who believe. It is our sincere hope that this spectacular place will inspire wonder and create joy for the people of China for generations to come,” said Bob Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Co. The park includes six themed areas alongside Disneytown, which includes 50 shopping and dining venues. Opening day saw tens of thousands of guests visit Shanghai Disneyland and Disneytown to experience many Disney firsts, including the first Mandarin production of the Lion King musical.
