Delta Air Lines is making strides in its efforts to reduce emissions.

Delta Air Lines announced last week it has entered into a partnership with Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels to purchase sustainable fuel. The agreements is one of the largest of the kind currently on record, Delta officials say. The agreement to purchase fuel from the production organization follow’s Delta’s previous $2 million investment into a feasibility study with Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels.

Delta Air Lines also entered into an offtake agreement with the organization, saying it will purchase fuel from the facility once it is completed. The sustainable fuel reduces lifetime emissions by 80 percent compared to standard fuel. Delta also signed an offtake agreement with Gevo, which is expected to produce sustainable fuel in Minnesota beginning 2022–2023.

“This focused study and long-term agreement will support Delta’s goals to lower our carbon footprint aggressively. Investing in developing multiple sources of sustainable aviation fuel is one of the many ways we are looking to address climate change,” said Alison Lathrop, managing director, global environment, sustainability and compliance, Delta Air Lines.

If the feasibility study concludes favorably, Northwest Advanced Bio-Fuels expects to begin production by the end of 2024.
