Once your luggage leaves your hand at the airport’s check-in counter, its path of travel and destination can be anything but certain. Delta Air Lines aims to aid wary travelers who check their precious luggage with a mobile application that lets passengers keep an eye on their luggage from check-in to the baggage carousel.

Delta’s already-existing mobile app now includes a map that shows travelers the journey their bags take, from check-in through various checkpoints, and even from one gate to another during a layover. A time stamp and a brief informative message that indicates that the bag has arrived to or departed from a specific place accompanies each checkpoint.

With the use of radio frequency identification luggage tags, Delta is able to track the bags and record and transmit data to users via the app. This technology is currently available at 84 U.S. airports with plans to expand to international airports in the near future.

Studies have shown the use of such an app that is able to determine the exact location of bags resulted in a decrease of lost luggage by 10.5 percent.
