For the first time ever, travelers can now fly nonstop from the United States to Sardinia thanks to Delta Air Lines’ newest route. The airline launched the route between New York (JFK) and Olbia Costa Smeralda May 20, operating four times a week. Before this flight, U.S. travelers had to connect via Rome, Milan or other European airports to reach Sardinia.
Delta selected the route after conducting a public vote with its SkyMiles members and employees to choose which European destination they wanted to see join the network. The three candidates were Sardinia, Ibiza and Malta, and Sardinia received the most votes.
The new route is operated via a Boeing 767-300ER and will run through October 2026.
Even though Malta didn’t win, Delta also announced it would begin service this month to the island, making it the only airline to operate direct flights between the United States and Malta. The seasonal service (to and from JFK) will run three times weekly until Oct. 23.
