The Czech Republic may soon cease to exist under its current name. The country is moving forward with a plan to be renamed Czechia.
The name change has been agreed upon by the country’s president, prime minister and other government officials. Still, it must be approved by the cabinet and then it must go to the United Nations, where it will be added to the database of geographical names in the body’s six official languages.
The Czech Republic is a relatively recent name for the country, created after the break-up of Czechoslovakia in 1993 into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, whose official name is the Slovak Republic.
The reasoning behind the move is fairly straightforward: The country is hoping to simplify things for sports teams, allowing them to display a much shorter name on their jerseys. The country’s hockey team currently displays only Czech on its jerseys, so the trend is already present.
The Czech Republic is famous for its capital of Prague, which is home to top attractions like the Prague Castle and St. Vitus Cathedral.
