Get your hiking shoes ready: Country Walkers wants you to tiptoe through the lavender fields during the new, guided Lavender in Provence walking tour. Covering a leisurely 4.8 miles a day over easy to moderate terrain, this 10-day expedition from Country Walkers sets off in June and July 2017 along the cobblestone lanes of Gordes, where views include a golden-stone castle above the valley of Calavon, and the shady oak forests on the sloped hillsides of Mont Ventoux. Highlights include wine tastings at area vineyards such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape, time at the outdoor market in Vaison-la-Romaine to shop for lavender soaps, dinner and a wine pairing with a master cheesemaker and accommodations that include an overnight stay in an estate that once belonged to the Marquis de Sade. Prices begin at $6,198 per person, based on double occupancy. Prefer a faster pace? VBT Bicycling and Walking Vacations offers the 10-day Provence: The Alpilles cycling adventure, covering from 18–45 miles per day at an easy-to-moderate pace. This small group adventure maxes out at 20 participants, and includes the use of a custom bicycle and helmet, two bilingual VBT trip leaders and full van support for those moments when you’d rather relax and look out of a window. The route winds through landscapes that inspired Van Gogh, a visit with a local historian in the village of Saint Remy, the medieval Abbaye St. Michel de Frigolet and the ancient city of Avignon. Along the way, enjoy a picnic and wine tasting at a local farm, dinner in the private home of a French pastry chef and a walk across the Pont du Gard, a UNESCO listed site. Rates vary based on airfare, departure city and other details. Departure dates throughout September and October 2016 are available.
