The Sculpture Coralarium, the latest in submerged sculpture exhibitions by renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor, opened in the Maldives. The location at the Fairmont Sirru Fen Fushi island resort is distinguished as the largest developed coral lagoon in the Maldives — the new art installation includes a 200-ton, cube-shaped tidal building. The structure is designed to suggest the branching forms of coral, filled with spaces that allow tides, currents and sealife to pass easily through.

The marine-grade, stainless-steel space is designed to be pH neutral, allowing marine life a place of refuge and a protected space for colonization. The eco-friendly focus of the new installation includes healthy coral propagation, with more than 200 bits of living staghorn coral near the entrance.

A stairway rising from the water acts as an entrance to the gallery, which houses around 30 works. Visit multiple times as the experience literally changes moment by moment. Light and colors from the sea reflect off of the surface of the space, and water levels shift to reveal or submerge pieces on display.

Within the internal space are 14 sculptures rising from plinths. The entire installation connects the sky and seabed, with some entirely submerged pieces and other works that rise above the water line. Most pieces rest in a space at mid-water, allowing them to be part of both the terrestrial and marine worlds at various tidal positions.
