Until Jan. 8, 2018, Olsen Gruin Gallery in New York City presents a solo exhibition of new paintings by American artist Tom Smith, including large-scale works. Known for his exploration of the psychological power of color and light, Smith works in acrylic with silkscreen on canvas to create edgy pieces with psychedelic elements.
The exhibition, “Swimming in My Head,” includes works created in Smith’s signature strip painting technique, with two abstract paintings cut into thin strips, then reassembled into a TV-lined distortion both serene and vibrant — and often thought-provoking. Among his inspiration for the new pieces, Smith cites Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. The gallery is located at 30 Orchard St., in Lower Manhattan, open Wednesday–Sunday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.
