Chinese airports and airlines spend more than overseas counterparts on IT, cyber security and baggage handling — all in an effort to deal with soaring passenger numbers, which rose 13 percent to more than 1 billion in the last year.
The SITA 2018 Air Transport IT Insights report shows Chinese airports raised spending on IT from 5.6 percent of revenue in 2017 to 7.5 percent in 2018, higher than the global average of 5.69 percent.
SITA analyzed nine areas of cyber security and the rate of implementation, with airlines and airports in China rating higher than the rest of the world in all areas. The report also shows China spends significantly more on baggage handling.
By 2019, all airlines will plan to have 50 percent of their route network tracking bags at every point of a trip. Some 94 percent will have transfer and arrival tracking implemented.
Self-service facilities, cybersecurity and biometrics were among the top priorities in airports worldwide, with 95 percent saying cybersecurity was the top priority. This year, data breaches at Cathay Pacific and British Airways affected thousands of passengers.
